What is marbling?

Marbling is a form of painting by floating pigments on water, a centuries old craft first seen in the ‘suminagashi’ works of Japanese masters in the twelfth century. You can find out how it works on our Process page.

Could you teach me to marble?

Yes! I run marbling workshops fairly regularly – check our Workshops page to find out when the next ones are and book your place!

Do I need special materials to marble?

The simplest form of marbling can be done with water and oil paint, which separates naturally from water thanks to its hydrophobic properties.

I use the Turkish tradition, which involves water thickened with carragheenan (Irish moss) and I recommend preparing paper with alum. Everything else can be picked up at a local art supply shop.


Can you marble using colours that I specify?

Yes, this is possible but will cost slightly more, drop me an email at with what you’ve got in mind!

Are the pages acid-free?

Yes, the inside pages are made using acid-free paper.

Can you make a book to a specific size/page/design?

We’d love working with individuals to create something special, be it for a wedding, an unusual gift or just a new bullet journal! Send us an email with what you have in mind and we’ll do our best to create it.

Will my book be the same as the photos on the website?

Marbling is a form of painting and each paper is created individually. This means that each one is a unique piece, with its own quirks. Lucy, resident marble, does her best to match the colours to the photos you see, but please do allow for some slight variations.

If you are really concerned (or are gifting it to a particularly picky person!), we’ll be more than happy to send you snaps of the exact item we’ll be sending out (and even other items we have in stock if you want), just let us know when you place order.

Ordering Online

How long does it take for my order to be despatched?

We endeavour to get your order to you as soon as possible.

If you have ordered an item that is in stock, we aim to send it to you within 48 hours of receiving the order and use Royal Mail’s first class delivery service, which usually delivers the next day but can take an extra day in busy seasonal periods.

If you have ordered a personalised item, it will take a bit longer – please allow 5 working days for the personalisation to be completed.

If your item is not in stock we will make it to order – please allow 5 working days for this.

If you are working to a strict deadline, just drop us a line at and we will do what we can to meet your requirements.

How do I know if my item is in stock?

We will notify you on receiving your order with an estimated dispatch date.

If you would like to know before ordering if your item is in stock, just drop us an email at specifying the size, colour and pattern and we will let you know. Since everything is made by hand, we keep a relatively small stock but can make your item quickly!

Can you send items to locations outside the UK?

We welcome international orders! We are in the process of setting up our online international ordering process, but in the meantime please get in contact [link] with your address and we’ll work out the best shipping rates we can get for you.

Do you charge VAT?

Marmor Paperie is not VAT registered, so our prices do not include VAT.

Is my transaction secure?

We take your online security very seriously. uses a security certificate (SSL Cert) which encrypts your data and transaction details, keeping them secure.

We will never sell on your personal details or release them in any other way – as a small business that is passionate about making beautiful products, we value our customers immensely and have zero interest in abusing your trust.

Returns and Refunds

Personalised products

Unfortunately, products that have been personalised for you can’t be resold so we can’t accept returns for these unless they are damaged or faulty.

Damaged goods

We take utmost care to ensure your book is hand-made to the highest quality and is packaged carefully to ensure you receive a beautiful, functional item but, in the event you do receive a damaged product, please notify us within 3 days of receiving the product and we will replace it.

Changed your mind?

No worries – if you change your mind about your product, we are happy to provide you with a refund, as long as you notify us within 14 days of receiving the item and send it back to us within 28 days. Unfortunately, we cannot refund original postage costs or cover return postage.

If you change your mind before receiving the product, just drop us an line and we’ll cancel your order and flag your order for a full refund.
