Our Story

A fresh take on a traditional craft

Marmor Paperie was launched in 2015 with the aim of breathing a new life into the art of paper marbling. Seeing shops saturated with mass-produced products, we wanted to herald a return to quality workmanship and give people back the joy of owning something truly special.

We were awarded the Arts Society/Cockpit Arts Award in 2016, providing us with incredible tailored business support to help us grow, as well as funding our studio at craft incubator Cockpit Arts for a year. After the year was up, the business had grown to the point we could stay on and it's continued to go from strength to strength - we published an instructional guide to marbling, Contemporary Paper Marbling, our stationery is now stocked in shops including Selfridges and Liberty, and
we have now added a full time staff member, Louise, to the team!

Paper marbling is an old and beautiful technique. We use bold, fresh colours and fluid patterns to add a contemporary character. Every marbled paper is different, so each book made from them is a unique piece. Find out more about the processes that make each book so special
 – and if you are interested in learning, we hold regular workshops but, be warned, it’s highly addictive!

Lucy McGrath

Lucy first discovered book-binding while studying Illustration and the University of Brighton and fell in love with it. She managed to slip a hand-bound book into most assignments, and carried on making them as gifts for friends & family after she graduated.

A holiday to Istanbul introduced Lucy to ebru, the incredible art of traditional Turkish marbling. She signed up for a workshop and quickly became obsessed, taking a course with skilled marbler Victoria Hall back in the UK, and doing a lot of learning through sheer trial-and-error.
