Learn how to create beautiful patterns using a range of both modern and traditional marbling techniques.

If you've already fallen in love with marbling and are ready to take your skills to the next level, this is the workshop for you!

What to Expect

Paper marbling is a centuries-old art where paint is floated upon a shallow tank of thickened water and drawn through with various tools to create striking, fluid patterns. During this fast-paced three-hour workshop, you will each use an A3 marbling tray and work with a selection of high-quality papers.

You should already be familiar with the basic concepts of marbling with acrylic paints and know how to prepare paper with alum, apply paints, and make a number of simple patterns. It's recommended that you will have previously attended our Introduction to Marbling workshop.

Contemporary paper marbler Lucy McGrath will guide you through mixing and balancing your preferred acrylic colours and demonstrate a number of patterns, with a focus on:

  • Spanish Wave pattern and variations on this technique
  • Patterns using a variety of combs including:
    • Nonpareil
    • Bouquet & Peacock
    • Chevron
    • Flamme

Marbling is great fun but super messy so make sure you wear old clothes (and shoes)! You don’t need to bring anything except a healthy dose of creativity.

You can opt to get your favourite paper made into a beautiful hand-bound sketchbook, notebook or diary at 30% off the RRP, an exclusive offer for marbling workshop attendees.

All the missing pieces of my marbling puzzle were found!

I joined the intermediate course and had a fantastic afternoon. It was casual and relaxed, yet well structured to ensure we covered a number of more complex patterns within the three hours we spent together.

We mixed paint and discussed troubleshooting interactions between different paints, practiced joyfully splashy paint techniques, used a variety of combs, all to great results.

I already can't wait to apply these new skills to my paper marbling practice, and my brain is bubbling with ideas! Thank you so much Lucy for sharing your knowledge. :)

I can't think of anything more fun to do!

Having attended a beginners marbling workshop before, I was very keen to have another go and learn some even more challenging techniques. Lucy pushed us along at a brisk pace to be sure that we all managed to try out the different patterns created by the various combs. Some patterns build up by working through up to 4 processes along the way. The morning went by way too quickly, but I was very pleased with all my efforts - even the ones that were a bit wonky! I am very much looking forward to seeing my papers again when they come through the post.
Thank you Lucy for a great fun morning.

    Marvellous Marbling

Not only was this course "hands-on" fun with a friendly bunch of people and led with just the right encouraging and informative tone from Lucy but we managed to learn how to create several traditional marbling patterns and some of the creative quirks and idiosyncracies of working with acrylic inks. Pitched just right.

A wonderful, absorbing and fun workshop

Thank you Lucy for a wonderful workshop, excellent instruction, preparation and pace. It was absorbing, fun and a great opportunity to discover and practice new marbeling techniques and styles. Everything needed for the workshop was provided and I felt we had space and time to learn and enjoy the day. I look forward to more workshops in the future.
