Learn how to ‘paint on water’ using centuries-old marbling techniques to create 7-9 of your own beautiful papers.

If you love playing with paint or getting creative with paper, this workshop is for you. Marbling is one of the most rewarding and fun crafts out there – plus it’s virtually impossible to do it ‘wrong’!

What to Expect

During this fast-paced three-hour afternoon workshop, you will be given a thorough introduction to the beautiful art of paper marbling, including a brief history, the technical ‘do’s and ‘don’t’s, and a lot of trying it out.

Paper marbling is a centuries-old art where paint is floated upon a bath of thickened water and drawn through with various tools to create striking, fluid patterns. In this marbling workshop, you will learn:

  • how to make the thickened water
  • how to prepare paper for marbling
  • techniques for controlling the behaviour of the paints
  • how to create all kinds of beautiful patterns.

Contemporary paper marbler Lucy McGrath will demonstrate various techniques and talk you through how to recreate them yourself, providing all the tools, equipment and materials you might need to get really experimental. Marbling is great fun but super messy so make sure you wear old clothes (and shoes)! You don’t need to bring anything except a healthy dose of creativity.

Intro to marbling

Spent a lovely Sunday afternoon learning about the history of marbling, its status as an endangered craft, and the process of marbling itself. We got stuck in very quickly and learnt lots of different techniques. There was plenty of opportunity to be hands on and we produced lots of patterns - indeed the possibilities are endless! It was a really enjoyable afternoon. Lucy made marbling seem easy (I’m sure it is much harder if you’re doing it professionally!) even for those of us with no previous experience! It’s a really wonderful craft!

Wonderful way to spend an afternoon

I have just spent an afternoon with friends attending ‘Marbling for Beginners’ with Lucy and her helper Ellis. Didn’t know what to expect however it was a wonderful experience with Lucy taking us through marbling history and then a step by step introduction which was totally hands on. Both Lucy and Ellis were so helpful, encouraging and patient! I was astounded at what I had produced at the end of the afternoon. So enjoyable, looking forward to taking the next course. Thank you ladies ☺️

Always Amazing!

I've attended several of Lucy's marbling workshops (and will attend more!) and always find them fascinating. Lucy is so knowledgeable, friendly and approachable and I think it's impossible to leave without having created papers that you're proud of and without having a great time. I would highly recommend Lucy's workshops to everyone.

Thoroughly enjoyable

I had tried marbling but without success so was very pleased to attend Lucy’s workshop. Lucy juggled a group of us with various skill levels and interests and maintained just the right pace. I learned what I had been doing wrong, and came away with lots of inspiration to continue at home. We learned the importance of preparation and the right tools, and were able to have a go at various techniques. This was a very good short course.
